What is this resource?
This is a complete lesson on levels of organisation and the human digestive system for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification points 4.2.1 and 4.2.2.1. It is the first lesson in Topic 2: Organisation and is designed to last 60 minutes.
Students define and order cell, tissue, organ, organ system and organism, and link each level to a real example. They then label the organs of the digestive system, describe what happens in each organ, and explain why food must be broken down into small, soluble molecules before it can be absorbed into the blood.

Lesson outline
• Starter (5 min): What makes something an organ? A real 2016 discovery about the mesentery.
• Activity 1 (13 min): Levels of organisation, with examples at each level and a table of human organ systems.
• Activity 2 (15 min): Label the digestive system from memory, then match each organ to its job in a card sort.
• Activity 3 (17 min): Why food must be digested, how villi are adapted for absorption, the journey of a meal and exam-style questions.
• Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.
Differentiation and inclusion
Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes first-letter label hints, word banks, a part-completed organ systems table and sentence starters. Stretch tasks ask students to estimate how many cells stretch up a tree, explain how the pancreas helps digestion without food entering it, and evaluate a sieve as a model of the small intestine.
The slides follow the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide: a clear sans serif font at a large size, a soft cream background, bold (not italics) for emphasis, left-aligned text and plain English. Levels of challenge never rely on colour alone, every slide has a proper title for screen readers, and diagrams include alt text. Teacher notes include advice on handling the digestive system sensitively.
