What is this resource?

This is a complete lesson on blood for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification point 4.2.2.3. It is the ninth lesson in Topic 2: Organisation and is designed to last 60 minutes.

Students learn that blood is a tissue made of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, and what each component does. They explain how each type of blood cell is adapted to its function, write the word equation for oxygen joining with haemoglobin, and learn to identify blood cells in a stained blood smear. The lesson also practises magnification calculations and comparing the size and number of blood cells.

Lesson outline

•      Starter (5 min): Why is blood red, and why does a red blood cell have no nucleus?

•      Activity 1 (15 min): Learn the four components of blood and their jobs, then complete a key words card sort.

•      Activity 2 (15 min): Explain how red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are adapted, and write the word equation for oxyhaemoglobin.

•      Activity 3 (15 min): Identify cells in a blood smear, compare their size and number, and answer exam-style questions including magnification calculations.

•      Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.

Differentiation and inclusion

Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes clue words, sentence frames, a part-completed adaptations table with a word bank, first-letter hints for labelling and a simple key for identifying cells. Stretch tasks ask students to explain why blood is a tissue, suggest a risk of using donated blood and how to reduce it, explain why people living at high altitude have more red blood cells, and use cell counts to explain why white blood cells are hard to find.

The slides follow the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide: a clear sans serif font at a large size, a soft cream background, bold (not italics) for emphasis, left-aligned text and plain English. Levels of challenge never rely on colour alone, cells are identified by size, shape and nucleus rather than colour, every slide has a proper title for screen readers, and diagrams include alt text. Teacher notes include guidance for students who feel anxious about blood and for discussing blood conditions sensitively.
