What is this resource?

This is a complete lesson on osmosis for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification point 4.1.3.2. It is Lesson 10 of 11 in Topic 1: Cell biology and is designed to last 60 minutes.

Students learn that osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane. They use a particle model, predict what happens to cellulose tubing bags, and explain what happens to red blood cells and plant cells in pure water and in concentrated solutions. The lesson uses the language of dilute and concentrated solutions throughout, so it prepares students directly for the osmosis required practical.

Lesson outline

•      Activity 2 (15 min): Predict and explain changes in mass of cellulose tubing bags using three simple steps, with an osmometer rate calculation as stretch.

•      Activity 3 (15 min): Explain osmosis in red blood cells and plant cells, including turgid, flaccid and plasmolysed, then apply it to exam-style questions.

•      Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.

Differentiation and inclusion

Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes a word bank, first-letter hints, a worked example row, sentence starters and a key facts box. Stretch tasks ask students to compare osmosis with diffusion, calculate a rate of water uptake, and explain how pond organisms and stored blood cells cope with osmosis.
