• 3 articles about some of the most dominant athletes of the 20th Century: Bob Gibson, Althea Gibson, and Josh Gibson. Sharing a last name, but not related to one another, the “Three Gibsons” combined immense athletic talent with grit, focus, perseverance, and resilient spirit to achieve at extraordinary levels while facing challenging obstacles that included racism, health issues, and childhood poverty. The target grade levels for the articles and activities are 4 through 8.
• 17 activity sheets, ranging from literal interpretation of the text, to writing prompts, artist expression, discussion questions for small and whole group lessons, and a mock press conference.
• 4 student activity sheets with each article, plus questions sheets for small or whole group discussion and other activities. These activities were designed with Black History Month in mind, but of course, are applicable for use with students during any time of year. The activities’ questions are meant to encourage rigorous thought and to put students in the shoes of these three pioneers who exhibited great character and strength to become some of sports’ greatest superstars.
