What is this resource?
This is a complete lesson on arteries, veins and capillaries for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering the blood vessels content of specification point 4.2.2.2. It is the seventh lesson in Topic 2: Organisation and is designed to last 60 minutes.
Students learn where each type of blood vessel carries blood, compare their structures in clear cross-section diagrams and explain how each structure is linked to its function: thick muscular and elastic artery walls for high pressure, thin-walled veins with valves for blood at low pressure, and capillaries with walls one cell thick for fast diffusion. They also practise the maths skill in this section, rate of blood flow calculations, including changing units and rearranging the equation.

Lesson outline
• Starter (5 min): How do a giraffe’s blood vessels cope with such high pressure?
• Activity 1 (13 min): Learn the route of blood through arteries, capillaries and veins, then label cross-sections of each vessel from memory.
• Activity 2 (17 min): Link each structure to its function in a table, see how valves in veins stop backflow (with an optional demonstration), then write explanations and peer-improve them.
• Activity 3 (15 min): Learn to calculate the rate of blood flow, change seconds to minutes and rearrange the equation, then answer calculation and exam-style questions.
• Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.
Differentiation and inclusion
Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes first-letter hints, word banks, sentence starters and a hint on every calculation. Stretch tasks ask students to suggest why veins look squashed on microscope slides, why leg veins have many valves, why blood from a cut artery spurts, and to calculate the volume of blood the heart pumps each minute in dm³.
The slides follow the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide: a clear sans serif font at a large size, a soft cream background, bold (not italics) for emphasis, left-aligned text and plain English. Levels of challenge never rely on colour alone, every slide has a proper title for screen readers, and diagrams include alt text. Teacher notes give guidance for students who feel unwell talking about blood, and make any demonstration voluntary.
