Transpiration and translocation lesson for AQA GCSE Biology 4.2.3.2: xylem, phloem, root hairs, potometer rate calculations, worksheets and answers.

What is this resource?

This is a complete lesson on transpiration and translocation for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification point 4.2.3.2, the plant organ system. It is Lesson 13 of 14 in Topic 2: Organisation and is designed to last 60 minutes.

Students learn how the roots, stem and leaves work together to move water, mineral ions and dissolved sugars around a plant. They explain how root hair cells, xylem and phloem are adapted for their jobs, describe how water is lost through the stomata, explain the effect of temperature, humidity, air movement and light intensity on the rate of transpiration, and calculate rates from potometer data.

Lesson outline

•      Starter (5 min): How does a tree lift 1200 litres of water a day with no pump?

•      Activity 1 (15 min): Label the plant transport system and link the structure of root hair cells, xylem and phloem to their functions.

•      Activity 2 (15 min): Learn how water leaves a leaf, then predict and explain how temperature, humidity, air movement and light intensity change the rate of transpiration.

•      Activity 3 (15 min): See how a potometer works, calculate rates from sample data, and answer exam-style questions on method and evaluation.

•      Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.

Differentiation and inclusion

Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes a word bank and first-letter hints for labelling, prediction questions that name the factor and give a hint, sentence starters and calculator steps. Stretch tasks ask students to explain why ring-barking kills a tree, explain how the transpiration stream is useful to a plant, spot a hidden variable when a lamp heats the shoot, and calculate the volume of water taken up.

The slides follow the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide: a clear sans serif font at a large size, a soft cream background, bold (not italics) for emphasis, left-aligned text and plain English. Levels of challenge never rely on colour alone, every slide has a proper title for screen readers, and every diagram has alt text.

How you could use it

•      Teach it as a full lesson on plant transport after a lesson on plant tissues and the leaf.
