Specialised cells and differentiation lesson for AQA GCSE Biology 4.1.1.3-4. Differentiated PowerPoint, card sort, exam questions and full answers.

What is this resource?

This is a complete lesson on cell specialisation and differentiation for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification points 4.1.1.3 and 4.1.1.4. It is the third lesson in Topic 1: Cell biology and is designed to last 60 minutes.

Students learn how the structure of six specialised cells is linked to their function: sperm cells, nerve cells and muscle cells in animals, and root hair cells, xylem and phloem in plants. They then learn what differentiation is, why multicellular organisms need it, and how differentiation in animals is different from differentiation in plants.

Lesson outline

•      Starter (5 min): Why would one nerve cell need to be a metre long?

•      Activity 1 (15 min): Learn how sperm, nerve and muscle cells are adapted, then complete a fact file.

•      Activity 2 (15 min): Learn about root hair cells, xylem and phloem, then play a ‘What am I?’ card sort and partner quiz.

•      Activity 3 (15 min): Learn what differentiation is and compare animals and plants, then answer exam-style questions, including one on an unfamiliar cell.

•      Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.

Differentiation and inclusion

Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes a word bank, sentence starters, clue words and hints on every exam question. Stretch tasks ask students to explain the adaptations of red blood cells, why dead xylem cells are an advantage and why a plant cutting can grow new roots when a person cannot regrow a leg.

The slides follow the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide: a clear sans serif font at a large size, a soft cream background, bold (not italics) for emphasis, left-aligned text and plain English. Levels of challenge never rely on colour alone, every slide has a proper title for screen readers, and diagrams include alt text. Teacher notes include guidance on discussing sperm cells in a calm, factual way.
