Science – Nutrients in the body

This Science lesson gives children an understanding of how nutrients  and water are transported around the body; as well as how the major organs function within the body.  

By the end of the lesson children should achieve the following learning outcomes: 

Give an explanation of how water is transported in our body

Give an explanation on what nutrients are.

Understand the importance of water in the body and explain why the body needs water.

There are opportunities for interactive learning, exploring where and what the major organs are in the body using a manikin.

I would like to make introductions by explaining my thoughts on childhood obesity. The news and various other social media sources have stated on numerous occasions that this is on the rise. Inactivity is growing problems which I am seeing myself more and more as a supply primary school teacher with a particular interest in fitness, health and wellbeing. I have taught as a supply teacher in Cornwall for just over four and a half years and have noticed that children’s lunch boxes don’t always hold any nutritional value, and are high in sugar, salt and fat. This doesn’t help the children! However, it is imperative to educate the parents the importance of both healthy eating and taking part in regular exercise. Can schools help the way children perceive food and physical activity? I believe this scheme of work can help educate children; it is aimed at Year 5 Primary school children to teach them in an enjoyable way in an immersive class room learning environment. The learning objectives from the National Curriculum framework have been followed, and carefully embedded into ‘Food for Thought’ allowing the core subjects maths, English and Science to have inspiring outcomes. With the foundation subjects encompassing everything from the different food groups, to how the cardiovascular system and the digestive system works, to learning the key scientific vocabulary in English, French and Spanish. I was inspired from what I saw as a primary teacher that many children were not able to hold a knife and fork correctly and hold a conversation within a peer group. The curriculum also links in maths; where the food comes from, to where it travels to using time distance and speed equation; measuring pulses before and after exercise and using this data to create graphs. The scheme of work is a plan which illustrates to both children and teaching staff where food comes from and the explorers who discovered these foods introducing them in the 16th century to Great Britain. It also delves into the importance of the 19th century Black American slaves and the importance of Harriet Tubman who made it through the underground rail road after the American civil war; understanding how the Quaker society helped for the right for freedom and the likes of Elizabeth Fry, George Fox and John Cadbury who gave opportunities to the workforce with housing and education. The topic promotes the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and good habits for life; an understanding and where food comes from, learning about the nutritional value of all food, what can be made from these foods, using budgets to create meal plans, preparing foods and cooking the menus for a parents opening evening, sharing all aspects of children’s work from the term. The overall outcome and achievement is to change the way children perceive physical education, therefore developing a passion and love for physical fitness through sporting activities; and a love for healthy food throughout their early formative years. Food for Thought’ is all about creating opportunities and improving outcomes, and already is providing a positive impact on the children’s lives that are receiving this curriculum. ‘Together we can make a difference’ to the children of tomorrow. I am a supply teacher with the aim to either sell the 12 week programme as a whole and sell stand alone lessons for both the core subjects and foundation subjects. I hope you enjoy teaching what I have planned, and the children enjoy their learning as the Yr 5-6 children at Mousehole Primary school, Cornwall did in the spring term of 2017.
