A practical KS2 reading resource designed to help children understand what good readers actually do when exploring a text.
The resource breaks key comprehension skills into four memorable reading roles:
SUM IT UP! : identify and summarise the main ideas and most important information.
CLEAR IT UP! : explore unfamiliar vocabulary, authorial choices and meaning.
WORK IT OUT! : make logical predictions and support ideas with evidence from the text.
QUESTION IT! : read between the lines, use textual clues and develop inference skills.
Each role includes a child-friendly explanation alongside a selection of ready-to-use question stems, making it easy for pupils to understand the skill they are practising and begin discussing texts more independently.
The “Work It Out!” prompts, for example, encourage children not only to predict what might happen next but to explain the evidence behind their prediction by moving the focus from guessing to evidence-based comprehension.
Similarly, “Question It!” encourages pupils to read between the lines and use clues within the text to infer characters’ feelings and thoughts.
