This is a complete lesson on animal and plant cells for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification point 4.1.1.2. It is the first lesson in Topic 1: Cell biology and is designed to last 60 minutes.
Students recap cell structure from KS3 and build secure GCSE knowledge of the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosomes, cell wall, chloroplasts and permanent vacuole. They also learn the order of size of cell, nucleus, chromosome and gene, a common short exam question.

Lesson outline
• Starter (5 min): What holds up a 116 m tree with no bones?
• Activity 1 (15 min): Label animal and plant cells from memory, then check and correct.
• Activity 2 (15 min): Card sort matching each organelle to its function.
• Activity 3 (15 min): Compare animal and plant cells in a table, including respiration, photosynthesis and protein synthesis, and put cell, nucleus, chromosome and gene in order of size.
• Plenary (8 min): Exit ticket at three levels, then self-assessment against the objectives.
Differentiation and inclusion
Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes word banks, first-letter hints, sentence starters and part-completed tables. Stretch tasks ask students to explain why root cells have no chloroplasts, why muscle cells have many mitochondria and where a cell analogy breaks down.
