This lesson is identification, height, gender, and ethnicity.
Crime Scenario:
“Scarecrows have been popping up around town with bones incorporated into the bodies. No one would have thought twice about it but local law enforcement have tied the bones to a rash of grave robberies in the area. The culprits apparently seem to think this is funny. The families, however, do not feel the same way and want their families’ remains back where they belong and the perpetrators caught.”
“First, you will identify the bones, determine gender, calculate approximate height, and make other pertinent observations. Next, you will compare your findings to the individuals whose graves were robbed. Possible matches will be sent to the lab for DNA comparison and confirmation.”
NOTE: I used this lesson with 7th and 8th graders but it could be leveled up or down.
