his is a lesson with digital resources (since the resources can be expensive to purchase). It can be adapted to in class very easily and with some modifications it could be a virtual lesson.
Crime Scenario:
“The Maxeys take great pride in keeping their yard looking nice, as you can see by these images. Puppy Dog, as he is affectionately referred to, has been keeping guard on the front porch since the Maxeys have lived there. But one day, Mrs. Maxey came home to find Puppy Dog missing. A note was left behind with a picture of poor Puppy Dog being held. Now the culprit, or culprits, must have thought using a variety of colored pens would keep the police from finding out who took Puppy Dog but they will find out they were wrong. Your job is to analyze the chromatograms and determine who most likely kidnapped Puppy Dog.”
This activity also includes two short activities with leaf and M&M chromatograms.
NOTE: I used this lesson with 7th and 8th graders but it could be leveled up or down.
