A set of engaging, open-ended mathematical prompts designed to develop reasoning, problem solving and deeper mathematical thinking across KS2.

These prompts can be used alongside almost any maths lesson, allowing teachers to quickly add challenge and greater-depth opportunities without having to create additional worksheets or completely different activities.

Rather than simply completing more calculations, children are encouraged to prove, explain, represent, investigate, create and challenge mathematical ideas.

Prompts include opportunities for pupils to:

Prove their thinking using pictures and diagrams
Explain their reasoning and convince someone that they are correct
Find multiple methods for solving the same problem
Represent mathematical thinking using practical apparatus
Create their own word and missing-digit problems
Work backwards from an answer to create a possible question
Explore incorrect examples and explain misconceptions
Create true/false and always, sometimes or never statements
Consider how changing part of a problem affects the answer
Evaluate whether a different method might be more efficient

The resource particularly supports mathematical reasoning and metacognition, encouraging pupils to think not only about what the answer is, but why it works, how they can prove it and whether another approach might be better. The prompts include sophisticated challenges such as asking pupils to prove why an answer might be incorrect and construct always, sometimes or never statements.

Perfect for:
KS2 Maths
Maths Mastery
Greater Depth
Reasoning & Problem Solving
Early Finishers
Maths Working Walls
Challenge Stations
