Year 3:
Pupils develop efficient mental methods, for example, using … associativity.
Year 4
Pupils write statements about the equality of expressions. They combine their knowledge of number facts and rules of arithmetic to solve mental and written calculations .

The associative law provides a flexibility when multiplying in that you can change the grouping with 3 or more factors without changing answer. This lets students choose groupings for quicker or easier calculations.
