1) The first resource consists of an r-controlled vowels anchor chart and five words list with pictures for each of the sounds ‘ar ir er or ur.’
R-controlled vowel words are also called Bossy R words.
2) ‘ar’ words flashcards – This resource consists of 30 ‘ar sound words’ with pictures. You can cut the flashcards and laminate them for durability. The ‘ar sound’ has been highlighted in each word for ease of reading. A sheet has been provided for the children to record the words.
3) ‘er’ words flashcards – This resource consists of 35 ‘er sound words’ with pictures. You can cut the flashcards and laminate them for durability. The ‘er sound’ has been highlighted in each word for ease of reading. A sheet has been provided for the children to record the words.
4) ‘ir’ words flashcards – This resource consists of 24 ‘ir sound words’ with pictures. You can cut the flashcards and laminate them for durability. The ‘ir sound’ has been highlighted in each word for ease of reading. A sheet has been provided for the children to record the words.
5) ‘or’ words flashcards – This resource consists of 30 ‘or sound words’ with pictures. You can cut the flashcards and laminate them for durability. The ‘or sound’ has been highlighted in each word for ease of reading. A sheet has been provided for the children to record the words.
6) ‘ur’ words flashcards – This resource consists of 30 ‘ur sound words’ with pictures. You can cut the flashcards and laminate them for durability. The ‘ur sound’ has been highlighted in each word for ease of reading. A sheet has been provided for the children to record the words.
7) Bossy R – I have… who has? card game –
This is a tried and tested r-controlled vowel game. There are a total of 56 cards in this pack.
Have the children sit in a circle. The child with the start card goes first. The children stand and read their cards. And a chain reaction ensues. The child with the correct answer stands up and reads their card. The game continues until the ‘FINISH’ card is read. To make it more challenging, time the children and have them try to break their own record.
You will need to print these sheets and cut them into cards. Print these picture cards on card stock and laminate them for durability.
8) Bossy R words sort activity – This word sort jellybeans activity is perfect to practice or revisit the ‘ar or ir er ur’ sound together.
There are five jars each for the r-controlled vowel sounds. There are 48 jellybeans with the r-controlled vowels on them. Sort out the words and place them in their respective jars.
Then record the words in the recording sheet.
