The guidance includes practical “conversation scripts” to help teachers handle sensitive discussions while protecting pupils’ dignity, with age-specific advice – from toddlers to teenagers.
Co-authored by developmental neuroscientist Professor Sam Wass and backed by NAHT, the guidance supports schools in managing scent-anxiety, social isolation and wellbeing pressures linked to the cost-of-living crisis.
The first-of-its-kind guidance comes as a response to research which has found that most UK teachers find it hard to broach the topic with pupils and their families. It reflects how staff are increasingly acting as “hygiene first-aiders”, with 1.1 million children affected but 59% of teachers having received no training.
